Grape Spy: Jean Smullen – SundayWorld.com
This week we recommend some great value Bordeaux reds that are perfect and excellent winter wines with slow cooked stews or roast meats.
Château du Bois Singing 2018 14.99 €
This French wine is available from Spar, EuroSpar, Mace and Londis. The Château is located on the right bank of the Gironde where red wines tend to be made from the Merlot grape. This wine has 85% Merlot, with some Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot added to round it out. With aromas of spices, chocolate and ripe plums, it has a lot of appeal. Taste the beautiful flavors of black fruits and the ripe, sweet tannins. A very accessible Bordeaux red with lots of red fruit flavors, it will be perfect with roast chicken.
Château Maucru 2018 14.95 €
O’Briens Wines offers this magnificent red Bordeaux in their annual winter red wine sale until January 30, where they offer up to 25% off a range of winter red wines. This wine comes from Entre-deux-Mers in Bordeaux on the left bank and is made from a blend of 60% Merlot 40% Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s a lighter style of Bordeaux red with lots of ripe red fruit flavors, it has soft tannins and is quite juicy and fruity. Why not try this with slow cooked sausage and a butter bean stew.
