Sutter Home Family Vineyards Wins 32nd Annual Build a Better Burger Contest
$25,000 Grand prize awarded to student teacher Sarah Grace Ralston from New Albany, Ohio for the Italian-inspired Via Napoli Burger
ST. HELENA, Calif., October 25, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Sutter Home Family Vineyardscreator of the nation’s longest-running burger contest, today announced Sarah Grace Ralston of New Albany, Ohio as the big winner of its annual competition Build a better burger® recipe contestan American tradition since 1990. Welcome awarded Ralston a $25,000 cash prize after five culinary judges tasted it and declared Via Napoli Burger the winner of the annual live cooking competition held at the historic Sutter Home Victorian Inn in Napa Valley. Five regional champions competed for the top prize, with receipts covering Char Siu Glazed Banh Mi Burgers with Pickled Carrots and Pork Pate Proposed by Will pay little of Austin, TX to Herbal Greek Perfection created by Kathleen McCarey of Tampa, Florida. All five semi-finalists received praise from the jury, but only Ralston received the enviable $25,000 grand prize that inspired hundreds of recipes during the 32n/a year.
The Via Napoli Burger recipe that won the hearts of the jury was inspired by the flavors of Italy. “I had just returned from a dream trip to Italy with my extended family and felt inspired by the incredible abundance of wonderful flavors,” Ralston shared. “A highlight was a trip to Naples and the Amalfi Coast. Sun-ripened red tomatoes bursting with flavor, huge shiny lemons, fresh arugula and gorgeous Italian meats were everywhere I looked. Creating this burger was a fun way to celebrate my adventure.”
Ralston’s wine pairing came just as intuitively. “Personally my all-time favorite Welcome the wine is the Red Blend. I knew it would go perfectly with that Italian flavor. I just wanted to stick with my favorite. I knew it would fit perfectly and went for it.” The live judging panel hailed the decision; following Ralston’s announcement as the winner, the chef Lars Kronmark of Culinary Institute of America praised, “The wine pairing with your burger was the best of five.”
Five judges made up the jury: Ziggy Eschliman, @ziggythewinegal; Katie HamiltonShaffer, @feastitforward; Chief Lars Kronmark, Culinary Institute of America; Liam Mayclem, Eye on the bay & The greedy guy; and Liren Baker, @kitchconfidante. “The burger was really creative, with an amazing use of ingredients,” Eschliman said. “I thought it had it all, from start to finish; it was juicy, it was luscious, it was delicious, it was salty, with a bit of sweetness. It had everything you could want. Creativity for me was really top notch Also it was Italian – it took me right away It’s the best way to get to Italy – every bite.”
Mayclem confirmed: “The burger delivered on everything promised. It was juicy, it was delicious, it was a feast on the palate. You took us on a trip to Italy. You delivered the name. All the other burgers were excellent in their own way; this one went above and beyond and delivered.” Hamilton Shaffer put it even more simply, “No kidding, I ate every bit of the burger. You are incredible. I liked it. I would have eaten five.” Baker concluded, “Each burger was amazing, but yours had the wow factor. I can’t wait to do it again at home again and again.”
Student teacher Ralston’s big, well-deserved check will be put to good use next year. “I’m currently a student teacher in a freshman class graduating in May,” Ralston said. “I hope to have my own kindergarten or first grade classroom, so I will use the money to buy books for my students, buy a nice carpet for the classroom and make it the most welcoming space possible for them.”
