This racy $12 Sauvignon Blanc tastes like passion fruit and lime zest
From a reliable producer of good quality, affordable wine comes this new line, called “Chac Chac” for the mating call of the partridges. Sauvignon Blanc is a bit racy in the herbal New Zealand style, backed by flavors of passion fruit and lime zest. Perfect on its own before dinner or with lighter dishes. Alcohol by volume: 12 percent. Bottle weight: 405 grams (Light).

This wine comes from the Thorn-Clarke family who bring us the exuberant Shotfire Shiraz. The Milton Park is a more understated style, with tantalizing dark fruit flavors and the grassy verve that Australian Shiraz is known for. While Shotfire makes an announcement, this wine is talking. ABV: 14.5%. PC: 545 grams (average).

Montenidoli Il Templar 2017
I used to joke that white wine in Tuscany is an afterthought, like winemakers finishing their brunellos and chiantis and saying, “We should probably do something before dinner.” But then I tasted the white wines that Elisabetta Fagiuoli produces in Montenidoli, near San Gimignano. She creates masterpieces that should rank among the best white wines in the world. Il Templare is a reference to the Templars who lived on the property in the 12th century, advised by Saint Bernard to drink wine to protect against various chills and ailments. The story goes that Bernard, in his wisdom, allowed the knights to determine how much wine was needed to warm their souls. This wine is a blend of vernaccia, trebbiano gentile and malvasia bianca, grown on ancient sea beds that are now Tuscan hillsides, offering a saline mineral complexity. With each sip, you taste the history of Europe and the Earth. To chill it well, you only need about 10 minutes in an ice bucket or 30 minutes in the refrigerator door. Too cold, and the wine will taste like any other wine straight out of the fridge. But just a little cooler than room temperature, the wine shines. ABV: 13.5%. Body weight: 455 grams (light).
