Two well-made French wines for € 8 each from Centra
Centra yesterday launched a sale of French wines in some of its branches, until May 19. Many wines will be familiar to SuperValu customers, as both are Musgrave franchises. In addition to the wines below, among the reds I would look for the full-bodied and rich Château Pey La Tour, from Bordeaux (⬠9.99), the lightest and fruity André Goichot Fleurie (⬠10) and the warming, round Vacqueyras Rémy Ferbras (⬠14). If you prefer white wine, André Goichot’s fresh and fruity Mâcon-Lugny (⬠12) also offers good value for money.
I don’t know how rare it is to find vineyards planted with Sauvignon Blanc or Malbec, as these two French varieties are widely cultivated in the Loire Valley and southwestern France, respectively. But the wines below are well made and offered at ⬠8 a bottle until Monday May 3, a public holiday.
Rare Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc 2019, France, ⬠8
Slightly aromatic, with fresh apples and pears and a smooth finish. Drink it on its own before dinner, with light summer salads and with fish and chicken dishes.
Rare vineyards Malbec 2019, France, ⬠8
Sweet, ripe and round, with spicy black fruit, it would go well with a wide variety of foods, including roasted Mediterranean vegetables, red and white meats, and cheese dishes.
